1、Passage 9What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know
how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It is
important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as
stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best
way of leaving by windows with the last chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average person,
hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of
an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or
smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get
fresh air rather than smoke that may leak into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From
the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement might end in injury.
Bushes and grass can help to break a fall.

1、Passage 17
Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human conditions is our tendency to give and receive support from one another under stressful circumstances. Social support consists of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to cope with life changes and daily hassles. People with strong
social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over a range of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, reveal that the presence of social support helps people fend off illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health likely.
Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives, and co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others despite our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social companionship supportive. Engaging in leisure-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support ― financial aid, material resources and needed services — that reduces stress by helping us resolve and cope with our problems.4.Helping a sick neighbor with some repair work is an example of( ).
