However, I think it would be best if you were to address this to the admissions office in a very tactful and humble way. Do not give excuses and do not blame your troubles as a child. Mention that it is not a reflection of your character and that you are completely different person now. If it would make you feel better, you could also mention that you were going through a difficult time (without going into detail), but do not let that sound like an excuse. A good way to structure it would be to have 1-2 sentences briefly explain the event and 2-3 sentences explaining that you deeply regret your actions, and that you would do anything to change what happened, and 2-3 sentences how you have changed since then and how it has changed you.
